Making Progress: My Journey to Overcome Obesity

So, I started the year morbidly obese according to my weight and BMI (Body Mass Index). At the beginning of January, I weighed approximately 260 pounds. I’m only 5′ 6″ (smallish frame). Those numbers give me a body mass index of 42 (morbidly obese). It makes me sound like some disfigured circus sideshow.

According to the BMI chart, a normal weight for my height (it doesn’t differentiate between men and women) is 118-148 pounds, and a BMI of 19-24. I haven’t been in this weight range since junior high or high school. Today, my weight is 237.8 pounds. That gives me a BMI of 38ish (only obese). I feel SO much better (I do, actually). So, I’m making progress!

As I said in my previous post, I have pushed myself harder lately. Today, I had a heavy leg workout. I started with the seated leg press. I maxed out at 677 pounds. I also pushed hard during the rest of the workout, using dumbbell squats, leg curls, and toe raises. I was supposed to do some leg extensions but ran out of time. However, it was a hefty, intense workout. It is 9:54 pm, and I can already feel the soreness I will have in the morning.

I will be considered obese until I reach a weight between 179 and 186 pounds. I don’t know how long it will take, but it will happen. The weight continues to drop as long as I stay on my way of eating.

So, in a sense, I’ve reached a milestone. Hopefully, it won’t be the last of the year.
